Mauritius South West Tour (Classic Tour)

The Mauritius South West Tour offers you the flexibility to choose between two itineraries, each offering a unique perspective of this stunning surroundings. Sit back and relax as you’re driven around the region’s most iconic tourist attractions, ensuring you don’t miss any of the must-see sights.

From breathtaking landscapes to cultural landmarks, our tours cover it all. Below, you’ll find more detailed information about the sites:

Chamarel Village – Visit Chamarel Waterfall and Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth. The village of Chamarel in southwest Mauritius is home to two natural wonders – the magnificent Chamarel waterfall and the Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth – one of the wonders of Mauritius, considered one of the must places to see.

The Seven Coloured Earth – One of the most iconic places of interest Mauritius is renowned for – you cannot leave the island without visiting Chamarel 7 Coloured Earth. Set in the middle of lush green vegetation, this unique geological curious happening is one of those amazing creations of nature that will mesmerise you. With distinct colours of red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow, the Geopark has 15 m of highly coloured dunes – an almost surreal, lunar-like spectacle of rainbow-hued dunes. The reserve is also home to giant tortoises, a few being long-term residents and practically the friendliest giant tortoises you will ever meet. Your entrance tickets also allow you to get access to the coffee shop and the souvenir shop.

Chamarel Waterfall – As part of the visit to Chamarel village, you will also have a great viewpoint of the gorgeous Chamarel waterfall. By many it is considered the most beautiful waterfall of Mauritius. Three distinct streams plunge from almost 100 meters from the St. Denis River, down into the gorge. The sight of this impressive waterfall against the scenic forest and mountains is truly breathtaking.

Black River Gorges Nature Park and Alexandra Waterfalls – As part of this tour you will also drive through the Black River Gorges Nature Park, where you will see many endangered species of plants and animals. Along the way, you will stop for a viewpoint of the Black River Gorges nature park and of Alexandra waterfalls.

Grand Bassin (also known as Ganga Talao). Grand Bassin is a lake situated 6km South East of Mare aux Vacoas in a secluded mountain area in the district of Savanne, deep in the heart of Mauritius. It is about 1800 ft (550m) above sea level. Grand Bassin, with its Hindu temple, is a holy lake for Mauritians of the Hindu faith. The lake rests in the crater of an extinct volcano. It is said that the water inside the lake communicates with the waters of the holy Ganges of India. The Hindus of Mauritius declared the Grand Bassin as a Holy lake and perform a pilgrimage every year on the Maha Shivaratri (Shiva’s Great Night) to honour Lord Shiva. Beside the lake, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and other Gods including Hanuman, Lakshmi, and others.

Mangal Mahadev – Shiva Statue. Besides the Grand Bassin, you will also get to see the statue of Lord Shiva. The statue is 108 feet (33 meters) and is the highest-known statue in Mauritius (and one of the 50 highest statues in the world!). The sight of the Mangal Mahadev statue is quite impressive.

Mare aux Vacoas – Mare aux Vacoas is the largest freshwater lake and reservoir of Mauritius. Found to the south of Curepipe, it is considered one of the island’s main water sources. Mare aux Vacoas, dotted with casuarina and coniferous trees, offers a unique surrounding of an alpine wilderness.
